SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — The Dominican Republic deported 40,521 people in October, the country’s General Directorate of Migration said. The agency also reported detaining 44,414 foreign nationals it said lacked regular immigration status. Its November 1 statement gave no breakdown by nationality and did not say how many of those detained were deported that same month. General Directorate of Migration

Officers checked farms and businesses

Immigration officers worked with soldiers, police and other security agencies. At farms and agricultural projects in San Francisco de Macorís, Moca and San Juan, the agency said officers identified nearly 700 people without regular immigration status. General Directorate of Migration

The operations also reached businesses in Duarte, Peravia, San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana. In greater Santo Domingo, the agency listed checks in Pantoja, Sabana Perdida and Villa Mella, among other areas. Officers checked people’s immigration status and looked at how businesses hired foreign workers, the agency said. General Directorate of Migration

Rights concerns for Haitian migrants

Amnesty International has previously documented reports of discriminatory treatment of Haitian nationals and Dominicans of Haitian descent during immigration operations. The organization has called on Dominican authorities to review each deportation case individually and give people a chance to challenge the decision and contact their consulate. The immigration agency says its operations are intended to enforce immigration rules while respecting human rights. Its October report did not say how many people were able to challenge their deportation or received consular assistance before being removed. General Directorate of Migration
